Follow-up to Rachel's Legacy

Suggested Discussion Prompts

Why do you think we had such a serious problem with disruptive and disrespectful behavior at the Rachel’s Legacy presentation?

Who is responsible for this problem?

Who is responsible for the solving this problem?

The teachers and administrators prefer to treat students like adults at assemblies. Most students behave like adults. Many of the adults in the school believe that these students have a responsibly to stand-up to other students, who behave disrespectfully. Is that fair? If so, what specifically does it mean for these students to “stand-up?”

  1. It's "movie theater" / sports stadium mentality. No one complains or tells students that texting, talking on cell phones, eating food, or spilling soda everywhere in a movie theater (or not picking up after themselves) is rude or inconsiderate. That happens so often in those venues, that it is second nature. Adults should model the behavior they wish to see, call students out when they need to be called out, and have consequences. Until that happens consistently, my guess is it will remain a losing battle.

  2. I agree with Jason. I think that students as well as adults adapt a "follow the crowd" mentality when in groups and do not feel any personal responsibility for their behavior. They will not be rewarded for being good, nor will they be punished for being bad if "everyone else is doing it." We need to figure out a way for us as a staff to be more present when in assemblies, whether it be by sitting with them in the seats as we did at the Homecoming Rally or by making our classes sit in groups.
